Adolescent Health

Adolescent Health Care at North Street Medical Care

At North Street, we recognise how important it is for you, our adolescent patients (aged 13-19 year olds) to be aware of our services and how best you can access them when you feel the need to do so.

 Did you know that….?

    • You can make your own appointment even if you are Under 16
  • You can come in on your own or choose who comes to the appointment with you. (This could be a parent, carer, other family member or a friend)
  • You can ask to see a male or female clinician (doctor or nurse) and we will try to arrange this. This may not always be possible if you need to be seen urgently if your problem requires more specialised support (see below)
  • We provide a confidential service to all our patients, including our adolescent patients, even if you are under 16.  This means we won’t tell anyone about your visit without your permission (sometimes called consent).
  • The only time we would ever share information without your consent is if you or someone else could be in danger or a significant risk of harm.  We would always try to talk to you about this first.

 How can we help you…..?

    • We offer a friendly available service for all our adolescent patients.  Our routine appointments can be booked by telephoning 01708 629733 to see any of our clinicians (doctors or nurses) or by dropping into the either of our surgery sites to speak to the receptionists.
  • You don’t have to tell the receptionist the reason why you want an appointment. However if you give them an idea why (without going into any detail), they will try and give you the best appointment with the most appropriate clinician.
  • Dr Burack is our senior partner and has a special interest in adolescent health care as well as being the lead and Named GP in children, adolescent and young people’s safeguarding for the practice and our local health area (Havering and Barking & Dagenham). He has previously worked at Great Ormond Street as an Honorary Consultant and is also a member of the Royal College of General Practitioner’s Adolescent working group whose aim is to bring adolescent friendly services to each and every UK General Practice.
  • In addition to our routine appointments, Dr Burack also provides dedicated, regular and flexibly available ‘Adolescent Appointments’ (including some Saturday mornings). You have to be Under 19 to be able to book one of these appointments.

Our Adolescent Appointments aim to provide initial and on-going health care / support in many areas of adolescent health care or concern for you. Some of the health issues regularly managed include:

    • General health issues {e.g. Skin/Spots/Acne; Sports injuries (especially knees & ankles); Body ‘lumps and bumps’; Aches and Pains; “Being tired all the time”;  Weight changes; Growth and development concerns; Understanding ‘Puberty’; Periods; Contraception; Safer sex practices; Young men’s sexual health needs / concerns;  LGBT health & support; Am I normal?}
  • Emotional health issues {e.g. Exam stresses; nervousness & anxiety; feeling low / ‘depressed’; OCD; Anger and defiance issues; ADHD; Self esteem & confidence issues; Eating issues – ‘too much or too little’; Risk taking thoughts; Am I normal?}

 The list above shows the types of issues many adolescents are young people currently come in and see us about.  We are here to help with your health and emotional concerns. You can tell us what is worrying you and we will not think your question is silly, trivial or judge you.

We are also in the process of re-enacting a CYP mental health access pilot with NELFT enabling faster access to community MH triage and services for those CYP who would ordinarily require CAMHS input.
